_FASHION BRANDS BORN IN TULUM
LAIA TULUM •
TELL US ABOUT LAIA:
I am a 35 year old from Barcelona, Spain living in Tulum since 2016. I came from the fashion world working as a fashion stylist in NYC, and wardrobe designer for TV commercials in Barcelona, Mexico City, and New York. I moved to Tulum and began traveling a lot through small towns in the region, and I found these amazing fabrics in Valladolid- Suddenly it dawned on me: I should make my own pieces for a personal brand.
I started making my own clothes, wearing them around Tulum and people began to ask me about the pieces, and that is how LAIA Tulum started. I just started the brand trying to do something fun, to fulfill myself creativity and make something with my own hands.
WHAT DEFINES YOUR PERSONAL AESTHETIC?
I can’t really define my personal aesthetic, I am like a chameleon, my style changes all the time, depending on the mood I feel, the vibe I am. One day I could wear a minimalist black outfit with structure, and the next day I could wear an African turban with a bikini. I think this minimalistic taste (not my personal fashion), just my minimalistic taste in life, is comfortable and feminine.
WHAT MADE YOU MOVE TO TULUM?
I moved to Tulum for love, I met someone on holidays, fell in love and moved here from NYC. I packed everything I owned and what I could bring, and made the leap.
DID TULUM IMPACT YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Tulum did not affect my personal style that much, I have always been very fashionable, now that I live in the Caribbean in endless summer I have way more colors and prints than before. In Tulum I feel a lot of freedom in terms of getting dressed, it’s a small town, but people from all over the world live here. I feel the freedom to wear whatever I want.
WHAT ARE THE VALUES BEHIND MY BRAND?
My values in my brand are: comfort and elegance. You can wear my pieces on the beach, in the city, in the pueblo.
HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR DREAMS IN THE FUTURE?
I always had this vision that I see all these contemporary dancers wearing my jumpsuits in different colors, even making them with silk, that would flow with the movement with the dancers. My dream is creating an artistic experience. I love doing collaborations and creating content with other artists.
